Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University established ‘Start-up & Innovation and incubation Centre’ in the year 2016. The main aim of this center is to establish an on-campus ‘Start-up & Innovation Centre’ to the creative ideas and projects from faculty, PG and UG students that would be instrumental in the benefit of the society and in the economic growth of the nation. The institution is planning to accomplish the Start-up & Innovation Policy (SSIP) with the financial assistance of the Government of Gujarat (GoG).

The SSIP center in the University aims to create an ecosystem with the support of novel ideas from the students and the faculties of the Sumandeep campus, State-wide and outside University. The innovation and incubation center of the Institution is having all primarily facilities which are sufficient to support the innovation and ideas of talented students and faculties to convert their ideas into proof of concept (POC) or prototype product or services. The center is providing the conducive environment to all the incubatees and provides full technical, legal and financial support to convert the POC into a successful product or services having the capacity to be commercialized.

The ultimate vision of the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth innovation and incubation center is to encourage the students and faculties to come up with the innovative ideas which can be converted to the products for the benefit of the human being in order to achieve the concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat of Hon’ble   Prime Minster Shri Narendra Modi.

 

Institution Innovation Council (IIC)

Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed to be university has established Institution Innovation Council (IIC) as per the norms of Innovation Cell, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, in collaboration with AICTE for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), on 21 November, 2018, to encourage the creative energy of our student population as well as to systematically boost the culture of innovation and start-up/entrepreneurial ecosystem in educational institutions.

The idea of Ministry of Education’s  Innovation Cell (MIC) is to establish  IIC centre throughout the Higher Education Institutes in order to engage a large number of faculty and staff, and encourage, inspire, and nurture young students in various innovation and entrepreneurship related activities such as ideation, problem-solving, proof of concept development, design thinking, IPR, project handling and management at pre-incubating/incubation stage, etc., so that innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem gets established and stabilized in HEIs.

The MIC envisioned the creation of a network of IICs across selected HEIs to stimulate innovation in institutions through different modes of promoting start ups, and entrepreneurship  by conducting seminars, workshops, Ideathon, Hackathon and other relevant  programme leading to an innovation boosted eco-system on the higher education campuses.

Welcome to Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Incubation and Innovation Centre (SVIIC) promoted by Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University, Vadodara, Gujarat.

Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Incubation and Innovation center is established aiming to facilitate and encourage innovative technology based start – ups that have an application and/or impact in the medical and paramedical sector. The center would support the start-ups by providing necessary guidance, technical support, infrastructure, access to investors, networking, and facilitating a host of other resources that may be required for the start – up to survive and scale. The goal of SVIIC is to establish ecosystem in order to foster entrepreneur-friendly culture in the academic institute through the well established and equipped incubation and innovation center with full support of in-house and external experts and mentors.

It has a central resource center with rich resources in terms of reference books, scientific journals, e-journals for comprehensive literature/patent search in medical and paramedical field to help the incubatees for prior art search and updates in the field of interest. Incubatees can access to the rich library resource to obtain the all possible information and related literature to strengthen his/her idea.

SVIIC invites innovative ideas in the field of Medical, Dental, paramedical (Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, health management, and ICT enabled health services) and Biotechnology which can be converted to innovative products or services for the benefit of the community. The center will provide full support to the incubatee with regard to infrastructure, mentorship, and technological support for the development of Prototype or minimum viable product (MVP)/ Proof of concept (POC) and also assistance for marketing strategies and funds requirement.

APPLICATION

Students and faculties who have innovative idea which has the potential for incubation and then can turn into the prototype/MVP and finally to the innovative product ready to produce in large scale through a new venture; are required to apply to the SVIIC through the Google application available on the website.

FOCUS AREA:

Sumandeep Vidyapeeth, an Institution Deemed to be University (SVDU) is registered under Section 3 of UGC act 1956, is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) at ‘A’ Grade with CGPA 3.53 at Four-point scale, and is conferred Category-I Deemed to be University status by University Grants Commission (UGC). The Institution has various constituent institutes like K. M. Shah Dental College & Hospital, SBKS Medical Institute & Research Centre, Department of Pharmacy, Sumandeep Nursing College, College of Physiotherapy and Department of Management. All these institutes are approved/recognized by the respective Statutory Regulatory Authorities and Government of India. The institution has numerous research thematic areas such as Oral Cancer, Oral Diseases, Diabetes, Neurological Disorders, Immunological Disorders, Sickle Cell Anemia, Tuberculosis, Parasitic Infestation, Maternal & Child Health, General Rehabilitation, Drug Discovery, Targeted Drug Delivery etc.

The Central Research Laboratory of SVDU has state of the art research facilities having separate areas for Basic Molecular Research, Translational Research and Cell-culture laboratory; with high end modern equipment like – RTPCR, PCR, FTIR, HPLC, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Brookfield Viscometer, Gel Electrophoresis and Gel documentation, High Speed Centrifuge, Biosafety Cabinet, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Stability Chamber, Photo-Stability Chamber, Deep Freezer, , Rotary Tablet Machine, Franz Diffusion Cell Apparatus, Spray Dryer, Trinocular Microscope, Rotary Tome Microscope, Student’s Physiograph, Plethismometer etc. are available. WHY SVIIC?

SVIIC has an advantage of access to resources of its all constituent institutions in field of Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Management in Healthcare  with more than 500 faculties in various medical and paramedical disciplines who can provide their expertise and mentorships to the incubates.

The center is equipped with Idea Zone areas where incubatee can discuss, think and develop network for exchanging the views and ideas for developing a prototype. Tinkering Laboratories are available to convert an idea to a real prototype product with the utilization of common wet laboratories and advanced analytical laboratory equipped with many modern and sophisticated instruments. The Centre also provides a small presentation room with audio-visual facilities in order to conduct meetings with in-house experts, mentors and sometimes with industrial experts in technology, marketing and finance areas.

SSIP Policy

1. Introduction

The core mission of the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) is creation of knowledge through scientific research which can reach the masses and impact the society.

The University recognizes the impact entrepreneurship in terms of identifying and solving scientific and technical challenges and acknowledges the role of Startups in commercializing the Intellectual Property (IP) emanating from its Research activities and business ideas.

The University is eager to welcome and promote entrepreneurship to be taken up by its staff and students and prioritizes commercialization of its IP and business ideas in a manner that encourages and fosters entrepreneurship and innovativeness to build Atmanirbhar Bharat or ‘Self-Reliant’ India.

2. Terms, Definition and Synonyms

a) Startup: Startup is an entity that develops a business model based on either product innovation or service innovation and makes it scalable and replicable so as to be self-reliant.

b) Innovation: Conceptually, any innovation implies substantial improvement in the ways of doing things, producing goods or providing services. It may involve a new use of an existing resource or producing or delivering existing goods or services through new methods or new instruments/device/materials.

c) Proof-of-concept (POC) stage: Proof-of-concept is the stage where the innovator / startup demonstrate a fundamental functioning demonstration of the idea / hypothesis / innovation.

d) Prototype-stage: A prototype-stage is a pre-production / pre-launch stage where the innovator / startup team has developed a basic minimum viable product (MVP) with most key features desired in the final product.

e) Minimum viable product (MVP) is a product with just enough features to gather validated learning about the product and eventually its continued development.

f) Student Startup: Student Startup is any SV student-led innovation based startup that has been founded by the efforts of one or more student(s) and / or alumni (not more than 5 years from graduation/ post graduation), from Sumandeep Vidyapeeth deemed to be University with or without the help of faculty guides and external support agents.

g) Faculty Startup: Faculty Startup is any SV Faculty-led innovation based startup that has been founded by the efforts of one or more Faculty(s) of  Sumandeep Vidyapeeth deemed to be University working since last three years on the permanent basis with or without the help of mentor(s) and external support agents.

h) Faculty-Students and / or Alumni Startup: Faculty-Student Startup is a Faculty and Student and / or alumni-led innovation based Startup that has been founded by the efforts of one or more Faculty and Student and/or alumni of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth deemed to be University. For this category, faculty should have been working on a permanent basis since last three years. Student(S) should be a regular student enrolled in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth’s constituent institutions and Alumni should not be more than five years of the graduation. The group may work with or without the help of mentor(s) and external support.

i) Pre-incubation: Pre-incubation makes up early stage support systems for the innovation & startup value chain that comprises an enabling environment to trigger creative ideas, hand-holding ideas at conceptualisation stage, extending basic facility to test the ideas and validate its early users, basic common working infrastructures, and access to existing resources before the innovation reaches an enterprise stage.

j) Incubation Centre: Incubation centre is facility provided to incubatees to accelerate the growth of Startups, through an array of business support, resources, mentorship, networking and other common services such as working space, capital, and coaching.

k) Angel Investors: An angel investor is a person who provides financial support by investing seed fund in a start-up.

l) Venture Capital: Venture Capital (VC) is a type of funding that originates from venture capital firms that specialize in building high risk financial portfolios. Such firms provide growth-level funding to established start-ups against equity as well as create value for start-ups by providing access to their networks for employees, clients, products, or services of the startup

m) Conflict of Interest (COI): Any situation in which real or perceived interests of an individual Staff Member, Visitor or Student may run counter to the interests of the University or negatively affect their employment or duties.

n) Sumandeep Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University).

o) Intellectual Property (IP): All outputs of creative endeavor in any field at the University for which legal rights may be obtained or enforced pursuant to the law.

IP may include:

  • Any product / therapeutic devices / formulation / medical diagnostic equipment / dental diagnostic or measurement equipment / drug molecule / novel drug formulation / new process of synthesis / formulation etc.
  • Literary works, including publications in respect of Research results, and associated materials, including drafts, data sets and laboratory notebooks;
  • Teaching and learning materials;
  • Other original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works, sound recordings, films, broadcasts, and typographical arrangements, multimedia works, photographs, drawings, and other works created with the aid of University resources or facilities;
  • Databases, tables or compilations, computer software, preparatory design material for a computer program, firmware, courseware, and related material;
  • Know-how, information and data associated with the above; and
  • Any other University-commissioned works not included above.

p) IP Management Cell (IPMC): The administrative unit established, responsible for periodic observation of all IP-related activities of the University.

q) Faculty Member: Any person working full-time in the University either in academic, research, technical, and administrative area.

r) Student: Any student enrolled for an approved course at the University.

s) Alumni: Any student graduated in this University will be considered up to 5 years from the date of graduation.

3. Purpose

Promotion of Entrepreneurship: The intent of the Startup Policy is to foster entrepreneurial ecosystem which encourages co-creation by involving students, faculty and professionals from multiple disciplines.

Entrepreneurship management: The Start-up Policy seeks to set the framework for the involvement of the University’s Staff and Students in Commercialising University’s Research into products, services and processes. It encourages Staff Members, Students to become Entrepreneurs. It also establishes clear rules and procedures for the creation/participation of Staff and Student led Start-ups based on the University rule and regulations.

Entrepreneurship guidance: The University has established Incubation Centre in the campus to provide the incubatees with the necessary guidance, mentorship and infrastructure support in order to nurture their ideas and help translate them into successful Start-ups.

Balance of interests: The Startup Policy seeks to reiterate that the employee’s primary commitment of time and intellectual contributions should be to the education, research and other obligations of the University and they have a primary professional obligation to act in the best interests of the University. Hence, care must be taken to avoid any cases of Conflict of Interest (COI) and Conflict of Commitment (COC) by all the Staff Members, and Students of the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth.

4. Scope

Applicability: This Policy applies to all Staff Members, Students and Alumni who are willing to or may have started a commercialization entity (Company/Start-up) based on the University rules and regulations.

4.1 Eligibility Criteria for Application:

  1. Any individual who is studying and completed graduation from Sumandeep Vidyapeeth deemed to be University.
  2. Any individual or a team of faculty member/non teaching members of any of the constituent institute of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth.
  3. Alumni will be eligible for the Startups within 5 years of graduation.

4.2 Type of Startups. University encourages and promotes the following group of incubatees:

  1. Group of faculty member(s)/ non teaching members and graduating / post graduating students / Alumni of the University
  2. Faculty member(s) of the University.Joint group of graduating / post graduating students and Alumni of the University.
5. Support system

5.1 Administrative Support for Research & Development: Sumandeep Vidyapeeth has a well established administrative background to support the Startup. It has developed an incubation facility to grow the Startup up to the level of the Company.  Incubation centre will provide support to the incubatee for all administrative, technological and the commercialization of the innovative products or processes.

5.2 Infrastructure Support: Upon admission to SV incubation centre, the following facilities will be offered to the incubatees:

  • Space for discussion and deliberations initially for 6 months. Further extension beyond six month will be provided based on review and merit of each case.
  • Internet connection
  • Computers and printers – As per availability
  • Standard Furniture
  • Photocopying facility on payment basis
  • Meeting and conference room
  • Mini laboratories/meeting room for scientific discussion
  • Common laboratories for testing / evaluating products
  • Library support for literature survey

5.3 Other Services Support: Apart from support as stated above, SV incubation centre intends to create possible other supports and services which would include as mentioned under:

  • Pool of mentors, experts in technology, legal, financial and related matters,
  • Organising events to help incubatees in networking and showcasing their prototype products/services or technologies,
  • Frequent meet with visitors (such as alumni, Venture Capitalists and industry professionals) of SV incubation centre.
  • SV incubation centre may associate with professionals for accounting, IP, legal and management expertise on a part-time basis and may provide the services to incubatees.
  • SV incubation centre will also build up information and knowledge pool to be useful for incubatees/start-up companies.
  • SV incubation centre will coordinate Skill Development, training programmes designed for incubatees/start- up companies.

5.4 Seed fund Support:  SV incubation centre may provide the seed fund up to Rs. 2 lakhs to maximum 10 eligible and promising incubatee/incubatees group as a financial assistance for pre-incubation and prototyping development in four installments. An installment of Rs. 50,000/- shall be given every three months after the evaluation of the progress by the evaluation team of SV incubation Centre.

5.5 Intellectual Property Protection Support: SV incubation centre will file the patent application for the IP developed in the SV incubation centre as the first applicant and the incubatee(s) as the innovator under second applicant. All the expenses will be borne by the SV incubation centre in all stages of the patenting procedure.

In case the patent is sold or the patented product is commercialized, SV incubation centre cannot demand more than 10% royalty from the innovator.

6.0 Financial Plan and Business: Once the prototype product is successfully developed, evaluated and found feasible for bulk manufacturing by incubatees themselves or by technology transfer to the companies or any other promoter who are interested to manufacture the product in bulk, incubatees can approach for fund to the Angel investors or venture capitalist for investment. SV incubation Centre may help the incubatees in searching the investors or fund providers for this purpose.

Incubatees have to prepare the business plan including budgeting details, brake even point market demand in the tabular form for the next five years before approaching to the investors.

7.0  Admission Process/ Method of Application:

  1. Every applicant willing to get admission in SV incubation Centre shall register and enroll through submission of the Application form (Google form available on the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth website) with details of innovative idea, Incubation Proposal, Business pitch/plan by duly filling the information.

The Business plan is expected to cover the basics of the Business, namely, value proposition, products and services, market analysis, competition analysis, funding requirements, capital structure, milestones and timelines, development and marketing plan, organizational structure, team, risk analysis and projected financials. Applicants may give such additional information as they think would help in the assessment of their proposal.

7.1 Evaluation: An expert technical committee appointed by the Policy Implementation Committee shall scrutinize applications received and invite eligible and selected idea with promising business plan for a formal presentation before the expert committee of SV incubation centre for understanding one to one about the idea and the business plan of the incubatee(s). After the presentation, a final decision will be made regarding the incubatee(s) entry into the incubator by the expert committee.

7.2 Criteria for Evaluation:

  • Strength of the product/service idea in terms of its technology content, innovation, timeliness and market potential,
  • IP already generated and the potential of the idea for IP creation,
  • Extent of involvement of SV incubation centre Mentors, employees and students,
  • Strength of the incubatees team,
  • Funds requirement and viability of raising finance,
  • Break-even period
  • Commercial potential, demand and requirement in India.
  • Scalability

The suitability of the proposal will be evaluated by expert committee regarding its potential for incubation. Detailed scrutiny including innovativeness, feasibility, market-demand in future, financial and technical aspects of the proposal shall then be carried out by the expert members for evaluation of the proposal.

SV incubation centre will have a sole discretion whether to admit or reject a proposal for incubation and the decision of SV incubation Centre in this regard shall be final. SV incubation centre is not bound to give any reason in case a proposal is rejected.

8.0 Non-Disclosure agreement: SV incubation centre adheres to strict confidentiality throughout the application process. Incubatee/incubatees and SV authorised person will sign the Non-disclosure agreement with the SV incubation Centre for protecting sensitive and confidential information.

NB: Under taking / Legal Contract would be signed between The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth incubation Centre and the Incubatees with a declaration that they are not part of any other Incubation Centre.

Faculty must sign an undertaking that they will not compromise with the daily academic workload in their concerned subject(s). They will have to work in incubation center after the academic schedule.

9.0 Period for Proto-Type Product/Service: Incubatees have to give the undertaking that in case, they fail to establish proto-Type product/service within the period of twelve months from the initiation date, in such circumstance; The Incubatees have to hand-over the whole concept/idea with all necessary legal documents to the SV incubation centre within 30 days from the deadline. Incubatees will not have any legal right to further grow the product/service with the same concept or idea in any other incubation centre. The SV incubation centre will have the right to take any legal action on the incubatee; if so happen.

10.0 Use of University Resources:

Staff and Students: The Staff Members and Students who are the incubatees in the SV Incubation Centre may be allowed to use University resources such as labs and other such facilities for their Startup purposes to reach up to Proto-type product/service. Use of any such facilities and resources may not be charged during the incubation period, except for facilities and instruments which are not free for the internal users. In such case, permission from the facility in-charge or department head will be required

11.0 Authority for permission: The Vice Chancellor shall be the final authority to permit to the Faculty and Student to participate as incubatees in SV incubation Centre.
